Sentieri Selvaggi perform works of Michael Nyman including a World premier of ‘Racine’ and ’The American Hand Gramophone Reproducer’.
‘Racine’ and ‘The American Hand Gramophone Reproducer’ are the first two songs of a longer song cycle with speed as its subject matter and were completed in December 2016 especially for Sentieri selvaggi, who are now giving the songs their world premiere.
The text for ‘Racine’ was written by the distinguished American poet Frederick Seidel (born in 1938) and speeds from the Grand Hotel et de Milan to Auschwitz by means of fast women and faster Augusta motorbikes. ‘The American Hand Gramophone Reproducer’ is literally concerned with speed - the mechanical method of achieving the correct speed for the playing of a 78rpm record, and is a transcription of the advisory text from the manufacturer’s instruction guide.
